Kultura is back on Saturday, Feb 2 and this year Area709 is excited to team up with the Steamers, a notorious crew of rowdies who will no doubt add a whole new level to this already top-notch gathering.
This year we will again have two rooms of sound, with access to all six areas of the gallery, including the video room which will be
new to our event. The video room will feature footage from a number of local artists and will be sure to engage and amuse.
Come out and party at Calgary’s premier contemporary art gallery!

Art Exhibits:
Matters of Denial – Chris Flodberg
This is a rare opportunity to see the collected works of Chris Flodberg, tracing the progression of his career, with a focus on the last three years. Flodberg’s monumental canvases follow the tradition of opulent still-life painting and reveal a tangible concern about society’s excesses, the pace of development, and the voracious nature of consumerism.
Grow-Op – The Arbour Lake Sghool (note the spelling)
The Arbour Lake Sghool, an artist collective, explores the suburban neighbourhood as a bygone viable farming environment through a short documentary film and a hydroponic installation to cultivate a harvest of barley. The exhibition is an extension of the barley field grown at the collectives’ residence in NW Calgary, which serves as studio, project space and inspiration for this exhibition.
Visual Projections:
Shaun FreeZen
In 2003 Shaun received his BFA with distinction from the Alberta College of Art and Design in the Media Arts and Digital Technologies program, and has been honing his skills as a digital ninja ever since. Launching Free Zen Design in 2005, he combines art and design to support conscious business development, artists and arts organizations, musicians and educators.
Interested in living bio-mimetic designs, Shaun’s technology infused drawing practice investigates the organic and geometric. His current focus on animation and installation based work explores intention and audience interaction. For an closer look at Shaun’s previous work check out his website at www.FreeZen.ca.
